The Chicago Municipal flag was designed by Wallace Rice and adopted in 1917. The original only had two stars, today there are four each representing a significant event in Chicago's history.
The white stripes on the flag each represent a different area of Chicago, the first being the North Side, middle representing the West Side and the bottom representing the South Side. The two blue stripes on the flag represent the city's largest bodies of water - Lake Michigan and the Chicago River. The stars represent the follwing places and events in Chicago: Fort Dearborn, the Chicago Fire, the World's Columbian Exhibition of 1893 and the Century of Progress Exposition of 1933.
